Welcome to The Paz Lab!

In the Paz Lab we are driven by a profound curiosity about the world we live in. We are interested in a variety of questions about biodiversity and its drivers. We love spatially explicit research and our PI has a weakness for amphibians (although she allows us to explore our own passions).  We love supporting each other’s projects and interests and welcome a variety of ideas brought in with passion and curiosity.

In the lab we denounce racism, colonialism, sexism and any kind of discrimination and we work to make our group an inclusive and supportive community.

About Andrea

The PI

I graduated with a BS in Biology from Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia where I studied the phylogeography of the Red-eyed tree frog and how the environment may be influencing the phylogeographic patterns. During my Master´s at the same university I studied the environmental and ecological determinants of population genetic divergence in amphibians of Panama. I hold a Biology (Ecology Evolution and Behavior) PhD from the City University of New York (CUNY). I joined the program and the Carnaval Lab in the Fall 2015 with a Fulbright Colombia fellowship. For my PhD I studied how environments can be used to predict different dimensions of diversity in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. At CUNY, besides working on my dissertation, I was part of the WallaceEcoMod development team mainly focusing on the development of tools with conservation applications and general software development. As a postdoctoral researcher at the Crowther Lab at ETH Zürich I worked on mapping diversity patterns and understanding the relation between environments and the distribution of biodiversity on earth.

Lab Members at other institutions:

Catalina Sánchez Melo

Catalina is a Erasmus Mundus grantee at the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in Tropical Biodiversity and Ecosystems - TROPIMUNDO. She is based at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. Her thesis co-advised by Drs. Andrea Paz, Marianne Elias and Camilo Salazar is titled "Geospatial Insights into the Coevolution of Heliconius and its host plants Passiflora in the Neotropics"

Iuri Amaral

Iuri is a masters’ student in ecology and evolution at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is working on a project titled "Global Climate scenarios and distribution of sigmodontine rodents in the Atlantic Forest " and is advised by Dr. Lena Geise. Iuri will be officially an intern at UdeM in the summer of 2024.

Santiago Suárez

Santiago is working on his honor's thesis at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia. Santiago is co-advised by Drs. Andrea Paz and Lucas Barrientos on a project studying the distribution of poorly known snakes in Colombia and their conservation status.

Lab Collaborators:

Lucas Barrientos

Dr. Barrientos is the curator of Herpetology at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Colombia. We collaborate with his group on different questions related to the spatial distribution of herps in the northern andes and the drivers of community composition across environmental gradients.

Ana C. Carnaval

Dr. Carnaval is an Associate professor at CUNY and was Andrea’s PhD advisor and the group still collaborates with her and her students on different projects involving the atlantic forest, the drivers of functional diversity, biodiversity prediction and more

Daniel S. Maynard

Dr. Maynard is an Associate Professor at University College London. We work with his group on a diversity of projects around the understanding of global tree diversity patterns and their drivers.

Eloisa Lasso

Dr. Lasso is a researcher at Coiba AIP, a research center in Panama. We are currently working on the integration of remote sensing data into the monitoring of ecosystem health and on improving mapping the distribution of endemic species of plants.

The Wallace Team

The Wallace Team and in particular Dr. Mary Blair and Dr. Robert Anderson. Along with the team, we work on software maintenance and enhancements as well as outreach and teaching of SDM building using Wallace.

Follow Dr. Robert Anderson on Twitter and LinkedIn. Follow Dr. Mary Blair on Twitter.

In The Paz Lab we want to hear from you!

We love having undergraduates join for internships or honors thesis projects. If you are interested in joining the lab, please contact Andrea and include a short message on why you would like to join our team.

Or you can drop by the office to talk, it’s B-5413.

Non-undergraduate applicants, please use one of the buttons below to apply to the lab.

We look forward to hearing from you!
