Outreach with kids

Andrea loves communicating science and in particular if it helps inspire children to follow STEM careers. She believes representation matters and children meeting a Latina woman in STEM is important to them seeing themselves as future scientists. You can read more about this on a blog post she wrote here.

This section has information on outreach activities with kids where Andrea has participated. We hope that in the future we can have activities where other members or the entire lab can participate.

Skype a Scientist

Andrea is a volunteer in Skype a Scientist. This is a wonderful program that allows schools and families to connect with scientists working on some topic of interest for a conversation. Looking forward to more of these sessions in the near future

Spanish activity with students in a school in Mexico

Here are a couple of drawings I got after a super cool conversation with 1st/3rd graders about frogs!

Women in Science

  1. While Andrea was working at ETH in Switzerland she volunteered for the Kangaroo Goes Science event in which the 100 best performing girls of the Kangaroo competition are invited to spend the day at the University and meet some of the research labs and researchers. She spent time with the girls, helped with IT for the talks and with video creation from research groups.
  2. Andrea has volunteered for different mentoring initiatives for girls in science including the 1000 Girls, 1000 Futures program from the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS) between 2018-2021 and the mentoring program from the organization for women in science for the developing world (OWSD) Colombia chapter. In both of these she meets regularly (virtually) with school girls to discuss life as a woman in STEM, career options and support them in their journey towards college.

Global Classroom

For a few years Andrea was part of an amazing program in NYC called Global Classroom

There, as a global guide she got to talk to students of different grades from the NYC public school system about sustainability and conflict in relation to Colombia, her home country. Here are some pictures of those talks

We’d love to hear from you!
